J.A. West

Company History

The West family has been an active part of the Eastern United States Real Estate industry since the late 1800's. In 1890, James Archie West opened the first real estate office in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. He called his business WEST REALTY and primarily focused on building and selling duplexes in the Pittsburgh area. James Archie West is the great-grandfather of C. Arthur West III, who is the current President of West Real Estate.

James Archie West had three sons, Franklin A. West and Chester Arthur West and Lawrence A. West. Two sons grew to adulthood-Franklin and C. A. West as he is known. These sons joined their father in the building and development business. These brothers eventually separated their business interests after developing many of the new concept suburban communities in what are now some of Pittsburgh's oldest neighborhoods.

In 1943 Chester Arthur West, the other surviving son of James Archie West, founded a company known as the WEST FARM AGENCY which focused on selling acreage and farm property. By 1948 he had expanded company operations into 19 states and had more than 250 sales associates.

West Real Estate's most famous sale took place in 1949 when John C. Bream, who worked from the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Branch Office, sold a 189 acre farm to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States. The sale included a 7 room brick farmhouse, 25 cows and chickens, and was sold for $44,000.00. This farm is now a National Historic Site in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and is open to the public.  Take a look at the front cover and the page of our 1951 West Real Estate Catalog featuring the farm that was sold to President Eisenhower.

In 1956 Chester Arthur West's son, C. Arthur West Jr. was named President of the Pennsylvania Division of the WEST FARM AGENCY. This division was later incorporated under the name WEST REAL ESTATE AGENCY, INC. Prior to Chester Arthur West Sr.'s death in 1969, the out of state division of WEST FARM AGENCY was sold to an outside concern. C. Arthur West Jr., who was President from 1956 until his death in 1986, concentrated on developing the company's market share within Pennsylvania. A graduate of Duquesne University School of Business Administration, he primarily focused on the development of real estate branch offices adjacent to the home "subdivisions" that were becoming so popular. It was during this period that many West Real Estate branch offices were established. These offices and their personnel concentrated solely on general real estate brokerage within the state of Pennsylvania and became the foundation for the company as it exists today. In 1981 the corporate headquarters moved from the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh to Gibsonia, Pennsylvania. Due to expanding needs, corporate headquarters moved in 1997 to its present location in Glenshaw, Pennsylvania located just north of Pittsburgh.

C. Arthur West III, a practicing attorney joined the company in 1976 and assumed the role of company president upon his father's death in 1986. Arthur West III earned his B.A. Degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and his Juris Doctor Degree in Law from Duquesne University in 1985.

C. Arthur West III serves as President of West Real Estate. West sales associates market millions of dollars in real estate each year.
